What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation treatment with little to no downtime that will leave your skin feeling smooth and soft. It is a great alternative for skin that is too sensitive for microdermabrasion or chemical peels. The procedure can be performed on most skin types including nursing or pregnant women. The only contraindication is inflamed acne. Exfoliation is one of the most important ingredients in an effective skincare regimen because cell turnover is the key to a healthy and glowing complexion. Some exfoliation can be done during your home regimen through the use of either mechanical means or chemical cleansers. However, professional exfoliation on a regular basis will provide you with substantially improved results. Dermaplaning allows improved absorption of your skincare products. You can also expect a more even skin tone, better makeup application and an overall brighter complexion
What can I expect during the treatment?
First the skin is cleaned and prepped. Then a surgical blade is used to gently remove the dead skin cell build-up and vellus hair (peach fuzz) from your entire face. Wait…. Did you say a surgical blade?! That is correct, however, it is a very comfortable, relaxing procedure. You can also add on an enzyme masque or chemical peel to amp up your results. After the procedure, a soothing mask is applied, followed by a topical vitamin C and SPF.
Why can’t I just shave my face??
While it may seem like a good idea to try and duplicate this procedure at home, the results will not work like a professional exfoliation treatment. The tool that is used is a very thin, precise surgical blade and is able to deeply exfoliate. Store-bought razors are not this sharp or precise, and the moisturizing strip on a normal razor can cause annoying breakouts.
What will it feel like the next day?
The day after a dermaplane, the skin might feel as though it has a slight windburn. It may be slightly pink, but there is no downtime and your skin will have a wonderful glow! Appropriate sunscreen is necessary after any treatment that exfoliates because fresh healthy cells are more susceptible to photo damage. Your skin will feel incredibly soft and smooth. One of our patients who loved the feeling of her skin after her first treatment renamed dermaplane the baby butt facial!
How often can I dermaplane?
You can have the procedure performed every 4-6 weeks for optimal results. Our cell turnover slows down greatly as we age, leaving the skin dry and dull. As skin cells build up on the surface of the skin, home care products struggle to absorb properly into the skin, and therefore are less effective. Dermaplaning is a great way to improve the tone, texture and quality of your skin. You can finally have skin that radiates!
